Not marble nor the gilded monuments

Sonnet 55: Not marble nor the gilded monuments
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Not marble nor the gilded monuments
Of princes shall outlive this powerful rhyme,
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmeared with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
’Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till the Judgement that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers’ eyes.

About the Sonnet

Shakespeare begins the sonnet with a declaration that his poem is strong and lore long lasting than any other things. The poet tells that whether it is marble or gold monuments of great rulers, all will get destroyed but his art work will remain alive. Time is compared to a slut and time both are not loyal to anyone. He compares time as apathetic to the female subject. Sluttish mean lewd here. Time is the one who can distroy all beauty of creature  but not his words, he wants make alive his beloved and his friend in his poem so the world can remember them till time and time.
The beauty of his verse will remain unfaded till eternity. The poet says that death and enmity destroys everything but poetry written of the subject will be immortalized for all generation  to come.
Monuments and statues brave the ravages of time . They withstands the vagaries of nature and get somewhat tarnished, some of may survive for few thousand years. And those tell the glorious days and power full time , they say that don’t be so much proudy because time will show your position But on the other hand he says that time cant destroy his words he is making his word more power full than time and those rulers . The rich and powerful people make there monuments to display there wealth so the future generation  know them .however they can’t bear the revange of time. As in modern time even we can see how powerful make there houses shows the power of there money but the time tell that that are not powerful than time .They also have to vanish there power and everything The day will come when people will forget them. Its true also even today we are reading the poems but many monuments are destroyed by time And the literature is the one who stands and tell the history to us.
Poet called the war as wasteful because it destroys the monuments. Its causes a lot of destruction to life. No one can gain any thing from war.
He sum up the things Untill he’s resurrected at the final judgment , the beloved will live in this sonnet “Dwelling in lover’s eyes” suggest that subject is love itself . his friend would live forever in the eyes of his beloved. The friend who betrayed him and enloped with his lover. By this poem he is showing his pain enrolled in anger and agony.
